Wedding music quiz: length, playlist, buzzer and DJ tips
Wedding blind test : a simple, unifying and terribly effective musical game that gets every generation involved. Well prepared, it creates laughter, awakens memories and brings guests closer without breaking the rhythm of the reception.
But how long should it last? How do you put the playlist together? Do you need buzzers? When should you launch the game? Here is my advice as an event DJ in Bordeaux for organising a music quiz that is smooth, elegant and truly suited to your wedding.
A music quiz in real conditions: energy, complicity and fully involved guests.

Why organise a music quiz during a wedding?
The principle is universal: a few seconds of music, a title or artist to guess, then a point for the fastest team. No particular talent is required. Fans of disco, French pop, rock, R&B, current hits or TV themes can all have their moment.
It is also an excellent transition between two highlights. The game can revive attention during the meal, create connections between tables that barely know each other and naturally prepare the opening of the dance floor.

What is the ideal length for a wedding music quiz?
The best length is generally between 15 and 25 minutes. That is long enough to set up a real competition, but short enough to keep the energy of the evening.
- 10 to 15 minutes: express format to wake up the room.
- 15 to 25 minutes: ideal format, with 12 to 20 excerpts.
- 30 minutes or more: reserved for enthusiasts or for a central activity announced in advance.
Each excerpt should stay short, often between 5 and 12 seconds. If nobody gets it, I give a clue or quickly move on to the next track. Pace matters more than difficulty.
How do you organise a successful wedding music quiz?
- Form clear teams. By table, by generation, bride’s side against groom’s side or girls against boys: choose a rule that is understood instantly.
- Explain the answering system. Buzzer, whiteboard, an object to raise or an answer given by a captain.
- Alternate styles and eras. Every group of guests must be able to score points.
- Prepare short, recognisable excerpts. Avoid endless intros.
- Plan a final. A last, harder track separates the teams in the event of a tie.
Which playlist should you choose for a wedding music quiz?
A good wedding music quiz playlist tells the story of the evening and mixes the generations. It is not built solely around the couple’s tastes: it also takes into account the guests’ ages and musical culture.
- Disco and funk classics: perfect for bringing the room together instantly.
- 80s, 90s and 2000s: popular choruses and shared memories.
- French pop: songs that several generations can recognise.
- Pop, R&B, rock and current hits: to vary the level and the energy.
- Film, TV series or cartoon themes: an ideal round for including the children.
- Songs linked to the couple: a trip, how they met, a memorable night out or the couple’s cult song.
I recommend several short rounds rather than one long, monotonous list: artist, title, decade, theme tune or “finish the lyrics”. This variety keeps attention high and multiplies the chances to take part.
Do you need a buzzer for the music quiz?
The music quiz buzzer adds a game-show feel and shows immediately which team answered first. It works very well with a small number of teams. In a large room, captains with whiteboards, flags or distinctive objects are sometimes smoother and avoid disputes.
So the essential thing is not the equipment: it is a visible rule, an attentive host and a simple points tally. The format must stay friendly and never become a source of tension between tables.
When should you offer this activity?
During the cocktail hour
A mini acoustic or musical quiz can spark the first exchanges, as long as it respects the cocktail mood and does not interrupt conversations.
During the meal
This is often the best moment: between two courses, when all the guests are present and available. A 15- to 20-minute activity revives the room without delaying service.
Just before the dance party
The last tracks can gradually become more danceable. The music quiz then acts as a bridge to the dance floor, with a final track played longer to get the guests on their feet.
Witnesses and children: how do you get them involved?
The witnesses can pass on a few anecdotes or songs linked to the couple. I then build them into a personalised round, while keeping questions accessible to the rest of the room.
For the children, a short round with theme tunes, film music or well-known hits works very well. They become part of the reception and the adults often play with just as much enthusiasm.
The music quiz, the signature of my evenings
It is the activity I offer at almost all my weddings, and the one couples still mention months later. The reason is simple: everyone can play, from the youngest cousin to the grandparents. No need to know today’s music — I build the game so that every generation gets its moment of glory.
Teams by table
Each table becomes a team: it creates instant rivalry, gets guests who do not know each other talking, and nobody stays a spectator.
A prize for the winners
The couple can plan a small reward for the winning table — a bottle, treats, a keepsake. A detail that multiplies motivation and makes for great photos.
Every theme possible
Cartoon, film and TV themes, 80s-90s-2000s, French pop, disco, RnB, world music, summer hits… We put the rounds together according to your guests and your wishes.
From 7 to 77, everyone ends up raising their hand — which is exactly what warms up the dance floor.
DJ Lexvolution’s tip
Prepare the music quiz with the DJ before the wedding. The number of teams, the musical styles, the length, the moment during the meal and the songs to avoid must all be known. This preparation allows a natural activity, with no dead time and consistent with the flow of your day.
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing tracks that are too hard or too similar.
- Letting each excerpt play for too long.
- Forgetting a generation or a cultural group present at the wedding.
- Piling up rules and point categories.
- Launching the activity during a speech, a course or an emotional moment.
- Improvising the playlist without checking versions and sound levels.

Frequently asked questions about the wedding music quiz
How many songs should we plan?
For a 15- to 25-minute game, plan 12 to 20 excerpts as a rule, plus two or three spare tracks and a tie-breaker.
How many teams can we form?
Between two and six teams is a good benchmark. Beyond that, collecting answers and counting points becomes more complex.
Can we run a music quiz without a buzzer?
Yes. Whiteboards, flags, an object to raise or one captain per team work perfectly when the rules are announced clearly.
Is a music quiz suitable for an elegant wedding?
Yes, provided the tone, length and presentation are adapted. A short activity, well amplified and elegantly hosted, stays friendly without becoming intrusive.
Should the couple know the playlist?
They can choose the styles, the must-have songs and the ones to avoid. The DJ keeps a few surprises so that the couple can play too.
