How to choose your wedding DJ in Bordeaux
The DJ is the supplier who will stay by your side the longest on the big day: often more than ten hours, from the ceremony to the last dance. They carry the atmosphere of your wedding — and yet they often get less thought than the choice of favours. Here is the method I recommend to couples, in full transparency, after more than 100 events in the Gironde and elsewhere.
1. Start with the reviews — the real ones
Platforms such as Mariages.net and Google display verified reviews left by couples who actually booked. Read a dozen and look for what keeps coming up: was the dance floor full? Did the DJ adapt? Was he attentive before the big day? A professional with 30, 50 or 60 detailed, recent reviews will always tell you more than a beautiful website.
2. Meet him (or call him) before signing
A successful wedding relies on the relationship of trust between you and your DJ. During the first conversation, a good professional will ask you more questions than he receives: how many guests, which generations, which musical styles bring you together, which highlights are you planning? If someone recites a catalogue without taking an interest in your story, walk away.
3. Check the equipment… and the plan B
Ask what is included: a sound system suited to the size of the room (and outdoors for the cocktail hour), wireless microphones for speeches, dance-floor lighting. And above all, ask the awkward question: what happens if a piece of equipment fails? A serious professional works with backup equipment — every critical element has its twin in the van.
4. Insist on a written quote and a contract
The contract must specify the timings, the services included, the options, the cancellation terms and the deposit. A vague quote or a booking “on trust” with nothing in writing is an open door to nasty surprises. Also check that the supplier is registered (SIRET): it is your guarantee in case of a dispute, and the guarantee that his professional liability insurance is valid.
5. Make sure you have exclusivity on the day
Some suppliers line up two events on the same weekend, or even the same day. Ask in black and white: will you be his only wedding that day? Will he arrive early enough to set up and test before the guests arrive? For my part, I block the whole day for each couple — set-up beforehand, presence from the ceremony to the end of the night.
6. Beware of prices that are too low
A DJ at €400 for a full day is mathematically impossible for a registered professional with serious equipment. Behind a rock-bottom price there is often an uninsured amateur, ageing equipment, or a cut-price service that stops at midnight. Your wedding night cannot be replayed.
The checklist to take with you
- ✅ Numerous, recent verified reviews (Google, Mariages.net)
- ✅ A first conversation where you are truly listened to
- ✅ Indoor/outdoor sound, wireless mics, lighting included
- ✅ Backup equipment in case of failure
- ✅ Written quote + contract, company registration, professional insurance
- ✅ Exclusivity on the day and set-up beforehand
- ✅ Playlist built together (and the do-not-play list!)
